The Italian Artist in the 18th century:

Influence, Style and Threat

From the end of the 17th century interest in acquiring works of art grew significantly and started to spread downwards from royalty through the aristocracy to the aspiring middle classes. It was a wonderful way of demonstrating one’s wealth and knowledge of both the ancient and modern world. Such a context therefore was an ideal seedbed for artists and dealers to start settling here and this marked the ascendancy of Italian Art in England, which was destined to gain momentum throughout the 18th century.

This talk, with lots of pictures, will look at a variety of artists, patrons and dealers plus historical events that all came together to leave us this amazing legacy which we still delight in today!
